Liberal ideas on money
Written on July 21, 2004
I just ran across a comment that typifies many liberals’ attitudes regarding the government and our money:
Money — It is my opinion that a progressive system of taxation is an absolute must. To whom much is given, much is expected. (emphasis mine)

I can’t help but scratch my head when I see stupidity like this. The vast majority of millionaires in this country are self-made millionaires, nouveaux riches who pulled themselves up by their bootstraps, took risks with their own money, put in long hours in their chosen enterprise, and had a bit of luck thrown in.
Virgil first said “Fortune favors the bold”1 a few decades before Christ was born, and the saying is still with us today because it speaks of a fundamental truth — that with dedication, sacrifice, and old-fashioned elbow grease, anyone can carve their own way in the world.
Instead, many liberals take the view that money is nothing more than largesse from The GovernmentTM, complete with strings attached. This is in direct opposition to the principles on which this country was founded: small government, limited by the power of an economically and socially free citizenry.
We do not subsist on the government’s money — the government subsists on our money.

The full Latin quote is probably more appropriate here: “Fortune favors the bold but abandons the timid”
